Lockport lies in Will County about thirty miles southwest of Chicago, on the Illinois and Michigan Canal, and it served as the canal's headquarters through the working years. The Gaylord Building stands just north of downtown on the east side of the canal, built in 1838 from local limestone as a warehouse and now a National Trust for Historic Preservation site holding exhibits, art and canal history. South of the centre, Dellwood Park was built in 1905 and 1906 by the Chicago and Joliet Electric Railway to give people a reason to ride the line, and for three decades it drew crowds of fifteen thousand and more on weekends to sulky races and baseball.
