Unity Temple has held its poured concrete rooms on Lake Street since 1908, lit from above rather than from the street. How a room is made changes what can happen inside it. Joseph and Betty Kettlestrings settled here in 1835, and the village incorporated in 1902 after voting itself out of Cicero. Frank Lloyd Wright moved here in 1889 and worked in the village until about 1909, the first twenty years of a seventy-year career, and the result is the largest collection of Wright-designed houses anywhere in the world. Unity Temple, built between 1905 and 1908, is part of the UNESCO listing for twentieth-century Wright architecture. Ernest Hemingway spent his first six years at 339 North Oak Park Avenue, in a house restored in 1992 and open to visitors.
