South Portland broke away from Cape Elizabeth over a disagreement about where the drinking water would come from, and was incorporated as a town on March 15, 1895. In 1940 the Todd-Bath Iron Shipbuilding Corporation set up what became the East Yard to build cargo ships for Britain, and the yards went on to launch 236 Liberty ships, employing some 30,000 people at peak, thousands of them women. Bug Light Park keeps the Portland Breakwater Lighthouse and the memorial to those workers, and Spring Point Ledge Light of 1897 marks the ledge offshore. The Maine Mall, the largest in the state, went up on the western side from the late 1960s.
