Fort Cumberland was the jumping-off point for General Edward Braddock's 1755 march on Fort Duquesne, and George Washington's first military headquarters was built here. The Cumberland Road began in 1811 and ran west to Wheeling as the first stretch of what became the National Road. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal had its western terminus at the same spot, which made this the place where water transport handed off to road. Nineteenth-century Cumberland was the second-largest city in Maryland after Baltimore and was called the Queen City for it, and the Narrows, where Wills Creek cuts through Wills Mountain under Lover's Leap at 1,652 feet, is still how the road and the rails get out of town.
