Set on steep granite hills where the Tiber and Patapsco Rivers meet, Ellicott City is one of the oldest mill towns in the country, its historic Main Street lined with stone buildings, artisan shops, and antique galleries. The Howard County seat carries a creative, close-knit, and resilient spirit shaped by its river-valley setting.
Main Street climbs hard from the old B&O terminus, and parking near the bottom is a challenge of its own. Nothing about a distance session asks you to make that walk. Attunement materials arrive digitally and stay yours for good, so a move up the hill or out of the valley changes nothing.
Three Quaker brothers from Bucks County, John, Andrew and Joseph Ellicott, bought land on the Patapsco on April 24, 1771 and built the flour mill that made Ellicott's Mills. In 1830 the town became the first terminus of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, and the station built that year is the oldest surviving railroad station in America, with the Oliver Viaduct beside it in locally quarried granite. That same gray granite is what Main Street is built from. On July 30, 2016 six inches of rain fell in two hours and tore through the historic street, and on May 27, 2018 more than eight inches did it again.
