The Atlantic Hotel, the first big hotel in town, opened on July 4, 1875 with over 400 rooms. A hurricane in August 1933 cut the Ocean City Inlet and separated the town from Assateague Island, and a second storm the following month widened the gap from about 100 feet to more than 500. The first boardwalk went up in 1902 as Atlantic Avenue and was rebuilt to its present 2.25 miles after the 1962 storm. The town calls itself the White Marlin Capital of the World and holds the White Marlin Open each August, the largest billfishing tournament anywhere.
