A high-desert city in the Great Basin along Interstate 80 east of Reno, Fernley grew from farming and ranching rooted in the Newlands irrigation project and the Truckee Canal, and it keeps a wide, open-sky character between the Sierra foothills and the sagebrush plains.

Fernley is a creation of the Newlands Reclamation Act of 1902, which built the irrigation system carrying water from Derby Dam on the Truckee along a canal toward Lahontan Reservoir near Fallon. The town grew on that water. On January 5, 2008 a levee on the Truckee Canal broke and three to six feet of water went through houses, forcing the rescue and evacuation of 3,500 people. It had only incorporated as a city on July 1, 2001, seven years earlier. Nobody knows where the name came from; Fernley in Nevada and a defunct Fernley in California are the only two places anywhere known to carry it.
