It is a gentle, grounding practice you can settle into at home whenever the desert pace asks for a little calm.
Paradise is the unincorporated Clark County town that quietly holds most of the Las Vegas Strip, Harry Reid International Airport, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, all set in the central Las Vegas Valley of the Mojave Desert. Its round-the-clock energy and constant motion make slower, more grounded moments especially welcome.
Around UNLV on Maryland Parkway, a change of address between terms is a familiar part of student life. Digital attunement materials come with you at every move and remain yours permanently. A distance session needs only a quiet corner, whichever apartment that turns out to be.
Paradise exists because of a tax fight. In 1950 Las Vegas Mayor Ernie Cragin moved to annex the Strip and widen the city's tax base, and casino operators led by Gus Greenbaum of the Flamingo lobbied the county commissioners for town status instead, which would block annexation without commission approval. The commission voted Paradise into being on December 8, 1950. The result is that most of the Las Vegas Strip, Harry Reid International Airport and the University of Nevada Las Vegas are all in Paradise rather than in Las Vegas. Its 191,238 residents make it the fifth most populous census-designated place in the country.
