The Clark County Commission created Sunrise Manor in May 1957, in part to stop the area being annexed by North Las Vegas. It sits on the western base of Frenchman Mountain, east of Las Vegas, across 33.71 square miles. It originally covered only the northern part of its present area and grew when the Vegas Creek census area was dissolved in 1980 and folded into it. With 205,618 people at the 2020 census it would be one of the largest cities in Nevada if it were incorporated, and in 2018 residents proposed doing exactly that, together with neighbouring Whitney.
