Whitney is an unincorporated Clark County town of family-oriented neighborhoods set in the Mojave Desert basin just east of Las Vegas, named for the nearby Whitney Mesa. That mesa's recreation preserve gives the area a welcome pocket of open desert trails and natural quiet close to home.
Boulder Highway runs straight through Whitney, and most trips across the east valley start by joining it. A session held at home asks for none of that, only a quiet hour you choose. Sprays and blends are mixed in Michigan and posted, so nothing waits on a drive across town.
Whitney is named for Stowell E. Whitney, a dairy farmer from Bunkerville who bought a ranch here in the 1910s and subdivided it in 1931 when the Boulder Highway went through. The name has been on and off: residents petitioned to become East Las Vegas in 1958 and changed it back to Whitney in 1993. Building Interstate 515 through the area in the early 1990s hurt local business badly, and recovery took most of the 2000s. It sits between Las Vegas and Henderson, and a good deal of what was once Whitney ranch land now lies inside Henderson city limits. The 2020 census counted 49,061 people.
