Two things happened here that reached a long way past the town. In 1929 a local man, Ridgley Whiteman, found the site at Blackwater Draw, and excavation in 1932 turned up the fluted stone points that proved people were in North America thirteen thousand years ago; they are called Clovis points after this place. In 1954 Norman Petty opened a recording studio on Seventh Street, and in February 1957 a twenty-year-old Buddy Holly drove over from Lubbock with the Crickets and cut That'll Be the Day there. It reached number one that September, and Peggy Sue followed in October. The Santa Fe railway had bought the townsite in 1906.
