The name is an accident of payroll. David L. Gallup was the paymaster for the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad, the only large employer around when the town was founded in 1881 on the southern transcontinental route, and men working the line said they were going to Gallup to get paid. Route 66 came through in 1926 and filled Main Street with motels, service stations and dozens of trading posts. The El Rancho Hotel opened December 17, 1937, built by the brother of the film producer D.W. Griffith, and put up Hollywood crews for years. The Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial is held each August at Red Rock Park, nine miles east.
