Out on the flat, sun-soaked plains of southeastern New Mexico near the Texas line, Hobbs blends its Permian Basin energy roots with genuine cowboy culture, celebrated at the Western Heritage Museum and Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame and at the yearly Lea County Fair and Rodeo.
Rotating oilfield shifts and long hauls across Lea County leave odd hours and little margin at the end of a week. Nothing has to be arranged around a drive when the session happens remotely. Whatever the attunement includes arrives in digital form and waits in your files until the schedule finally opens.
James Isaac Hobbs, a farmer, founded this town in 1907, and by 1911 about twenty-five families held land here. Drilling started October 12, 1927, oil came in at 4,065 feet, and that one well went on to produce more than half a million barrels. The town went from 598 people in the 1930 census to more than twelve thousand at the peak of the boom, then fell to roughly three thousand by 1931 when the Depression took oil prices down with it. By 1960 it was past twenty-five thousand. It is the seat of Lea County and sits over the New Mexico side of the Permian Basin.
