This is the Las Vegas on the Santa Fe Trail, in San Miguel County, and its plaza was laid out by Mexican settlers in 1835 in the Spanish colonial pattern, adobe buildings ringing a square that could be defended if it came to that. The trail trade made it prosper. Montezuma Castle, a railroad hotel built between 1882 and 1886 to designs by Burnham and Root for the Santa Fe, stands outside town and in 1997 became the first property west of the Mississippi named under Save America's Treasures; it is part of the United World College campus now. Theodore Roosevelt held the first Rough Riders reunion here, because so many of the regiment came from this county.
