Governor Pedro de Peralta formally founded Santa Fe around 1610 as the capital of Santa Fe de Nuevo Mexico, and it has stayed a capital under Spanish, Mexican and United States government ever since, which makes it the oldest one in the country. The Palace of the Governors went up soon after and is the oldest public building still in continuous use that European settlers put up in the continental United States. It spans the north side of the Plaza, which was the end of El Camino Real in New Mexico for nearly three hundred years. It is also the only seat of government in the United States ever taken by Native people, held from the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 until the Spanish returned in 1692.
