On July 11, 1598 a scouting party from Juan de Onate's expedition reached Ohkay Owingeh where the Chama meets the Rio Grande, and the Spanish established their first capital in New Mexico here. By early 1599 they had moved across to the village of Yunque on the west bank and called it San Gabriel, and that settlement, with its cabildo, was the seat of government until Santa Fe was founded in 1610. Nearby Chimayo was settled in the early eighteenth century after the reconquest and has been a center of Spanish weaving for more than two hundred and fifty years. In the 1980s Espanola declared itself the Lowrider Capital of the World and has been defending the title since.
