Ashley Pond, a Detroit businessman, took an option on this land on the Pajarito Plateau in 1913 and pulled in boyhood friends who ran the Packard and Hudson motor companies. The Los Alamos Ranch School, a boys' boarding school, operated here from 1917 to 1942, and Fuller Lodge was its main building. Then the government took the school, displacing Pueblo people and homesteaders along with it, and ran Project Y out of the buildings; the schoolmasters' houses on Bathtub Row became scientists' quarters. Manhattan Project National Historical Park now covers this site along with Oak Ridge and Hanford. The town is also the gateway to Bandelier National Monument and Valles Caldera.
