Taos Pueblo is the only Native community in the country that is both a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1992, and a National Historic Landmark. Its multi-storied adobe has been lived in continuously for more than a thousand years, and the shape of it is behind most of the architecture in the rest of the town. Six painters, Bert Phillips, Ernest Blumenschein, Oscar Berninghaus, Joseph Sharp, E. Irving Couse and Herbert Dunton, formed the Taos Society of Artists in 1915 and sent traveling shows across the country until 1927, which is how a small mountain town became one of the important art colonies in America. West of town the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge crosses six hundred and fifty feet above the river.
