Silver City sits at the edge of the Gila Wilderness, blending Western New Mexico University, a lively downtown arts district, and old mining history into a walkable high-desert town. Its galleries, trails, and creative spirit draw people already inclined toward holistic, intentional living.
Main Street dropped into a ditch after historic floods, and the Continental Divide Trail passes near enough that through-hikers resupply downtown. Silver City went up fast as a mining town in 1870 with very little thought given to drainage, and the bill came due one night in July 1895 when a wall of water came through the business district and cut a channel fifty-five feet below the level of Main Street. Merchants gave up and started using their back doors on Bullard Street as their front doors, which is why the commercial street runs where it does. A creek runs through the cut now and it is a public park, the Big Ditch. After 1900 copper took over from silver, two smelters were working ore from the surrounding districts, and this became the main town of the state's largest copper region.
