This is Astoria in Queens, on the East River. Stephen Halsey moved here in 1835 meaning to build a real village, bought land, started a ferry and laid out Astoria Boulevard, and the place incorporated in 1839. The name is the residue of a failed fundraise: Halsey asked John Jacob Astor for two thousand dollars toward a seminary, Astor sent five hundred, and the name stuck anyway. Famous Players Lasky built a film studio on 35th Avenue in 1920 and made more than a hundred silent features there in that decade. Astoria Park under the Hell Gate Bridge holds the largest public pool in the city, three hundred and thirty feet long.
