Peter Stuyvesant formally incorporated this settlement in 1660 and named it after Haarlem in the Netherlands. The Apollo Theater opened on January 26, 1934 on 125th Street in what had been a burlesque house, and it became the room where a great deal of American music was first heard by an audience willing to say so out loud.
