The Dutch town of Breuckelen was established in 1646, and the name first appeared in print in 1663. For most of its history this was not part of New York City but a rival to it, and by the late nineteenth century it was one of the largest cities in the country in its own right. The bridge that ended the separation was completed in 1883. Prospect Park was finished in 1873 by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, working after Central Park and generally reckoned to have improved on it. On January 1, 1898 Brooklyn was consolidated into the five-borough city.
