French Huguenots bought a patent of roughly forty thousand acres from the Esopus in 1677 and settled the following year, Louis DuBois among them. The center of it was Huguenot Street along the east bank of the Wallkill, where the church, the schools, the blacksmith and the stores stood, and the stone houses on it are still there. The Wallkill runs north from here into the Rondout and then the Hudson, with the Shawangunk ridge standing over the west side of town. SUNY New Paltz was founded in 1828 and moved to its Plattekill Avenue campus late in that century. In 2004 Mayor Jason West married twenty-five same-sex couples here when doing so was against state law.
