Peter Stuyvesant fortified the high ground here in 1658 and chartered the place as Wiltwijck in 1661; that original settlement is the Stockade District, and seventeenth-century stone buildings still stand in it. In 1777 Kingston was the first capital of New York State. The constitution was completed here on April 20 and George Clinton was sworn in as governor on July 30, and on October 16 British troops coming upriver after Saratoga burned the town. The Senate House from the 1670s survived. Construction of the Delaware and Hudson Canal ran from 1825 to 1828 and turned Rondout into a tidewater coal terminal.
