A group of Dutch settlers crossed the river from Kingston in 1686 and bought twenty-two hundred acres from three members of the Sepasco band, whose name comes from a word meaning little river. The Beekman Arms on the main street was begun in 1766 and has operated as an inn ever since, which is the basis of its claim to be the oldest continually running inn in America. The village incorporated in 1834. A perspective map drawn in 1890 shows a village center that has stayed substantially as it was, which is why the historic district covers so much of it.
