Overlook Mountain rises above Tinker Street, and the Tibetan monastery on its slope has drawn practitioners here for decades. The 1969 festival happened elsewhere, yet the name still gathers people who are looking. Flower essence blends are mixed to order in Michigan, then dropped in the mail, so a mountain address is no obstacle.
The first thing to know is that the festival was not here. The 1969 concert was held about sixty miles away at Max Yasgur's farm in Bethel, in Sullivan County, after this town declined a permit and a Saugerties site fell through. What is actually here is older and quieter. Ralph Radcliffe Whitehead, Bolton Brown and Hervey White founded the Byrdcliffe arts colony in 1902, one of the oldest in the country, and in 1916 White built a music chapel in the woods that became the Maverick festival, the longest-running summer chamber music series in the United States and still going. The town itself was established in 1787.
