Where the Catskills meet the Hudson, Saugerties offers a laid-back, nature-rich atmosphere that resonates with holistic and earth-centered healing.
An 1869 lighthouse still marks the mouth of the Esopus, and Opus 40's bluestone terraces sit a few miles inland. Horse-show season brings its own crowd every summer. Blends are mixed by hand in Michigan and shipped, and distance sessions never hinge on a drive down Route 9W.
The name comes from the Dutch for sawyer's creek. In the 1650s Barent Cornelis Volge was running a sawmill on the Sawyer's Kill and sending lumber to Rensselaerswick. The Esopus Creek, which enters the Hudson just south of the village, drops thirty-one feet here, and Henry Barclay built paper mills on that fall around 1827; by 1877 they ran three shifts with about three hundred hands and made two and a half tons of paper a day, and they kept going until 1969. The lighthouse at the creek mouth was begun in 1835, rebuilt in 1867 with a twenty-five-thousand-dollar appropriation, lit in 1869 and automated in 1954.
