The hamlet is named for a tannery. The Phoenix Tannery ran here from 1836 until about 1870, employing Irish immigrants and going through several owners' names, and it burned down in 1873. Tanning gave way to bluestone quarrying in the second half of the century, and the mountains around are still full of the quarry cuts. The Ulster and Delaware Railroad reached this community before it reached its neighbors, which made it an early Catskills tourist stop; the New York Central took the line over on February 1, 1932 and passenger service ended on March 31, 1954. The Esopus Creek runs through the middle of it.
