Catskill is the seat of Greene County, which lies just west of the Hudson and south of Albany, low and flat along the river before rising sharply into the Catskill Mountains to the south and west. It was the home of Thomas Cole, who founded the Hudson River School of painting; in the summer of 1825 he travelled up the river from New York City to this village for the first time, visiting the Hudson Highlands, Kaaterskill Falls and the Catskill Mountain House. Kaaterskill Falls, about ten miles from Cole's house in the town of Hunter, is a two-drop waterfall totalling two hundred and sixty feet, among the highest in New York and in the eastern United States, and Cole's paintings of it set the wilderness ideal for American landscape art.
