Asheville was called Morristown before it was incorporated in 1797 and renamed for Governor Samuel Ashe. The reason its downtown looks the way it does is economic failure rather than preservation policy: from the start of the Depression through the 1980s growth here was slow, almost nothing new was built, and the Art Deco blocks simply survived because no one had the money to replace them. George Vanderbilt built the Biltmore Estate outside town, and after the 1916 flood damaged parts of it the company sold off land that became Biltmore Forest.
