The University of North Carolina was founded in 1789 and the town came afterwards, created by the General Assembly in 1819 to serve it; the charter followed in 1851. The name is older than either and comes from New Hope Chapel, a small Anglican building put up in 1752 on the crest of the hill. Christopher Barbee gave the university trustees two hundred and twenty-one acres in 1792, making him its largest early donor, and the campus stands on that land. Franklin Street, the main road through town, is named for Benjamin Franklin.
