Elisha Martindale settled what was then swamp wilderness in 1832, the town was laid out in 1835 and named after Bowling Green, Kentucky, and it incorporated in 1855 and became a city in 1901. Oil was struck nearby in 1886 and the boom that followed, mostly glass manufacture, lasted only until the wells gave out, but the money it made is still legible in the downtown storefronts and in the big early houses along Wooster Street. The state normal school founded in 1910 became Bowling Green State University in 1935, and a tomato cannery built four years after the school did as much for the town at the time.
