This artsy Greene County village is wrapped around the Glen Helen Nature Preserve and neighboring John Bryan State Park, where the Little Miami River carves through limestone gorges. Long a haven for creatives, healers, and Antioch College free-thinkers, Yellow Springs is a community already attuned to holistic and nature-centered wellness.
Twice a year the Street Fair fills a few blocks with visitors, then the village settles back into its own unhurried rhythm. Sessions here happen at a distance, so the calendar bends around that rhythm instead of around a drive. Essences and aura sprays are blended in Michigan and sent by post.
The village is named for a natural spring whose iron-rich water runs yellow-orange, and that spring sits inside Glen Helen, a thousand acres of woods, waterways, prairie and limestone cliff immediately east of town with about twenty-five miles of footpaths. Hugh Taylor Birch gave the first seven hundred acres to Antioch College in 1929 in memory of his daughter Helen Birch Bartlett, and it was named a National Natural Landmark in 1965. In 1960 residents formed the Glen Helen Association and beat back two threats at once, a highway bypass for what is now US 68 and a municipal sewer line.
