Ashland was settled in 1852 during a gold rush and laid out in 1860, named after Ashland County in Ohio and Ashland in Kentucky, and it started as a farming and mill town whose residents took culture seriously from early on. In 1893, when the population was eighteen hundred, the Southern Oregon Chautauqua Association built a performance venue above Ashland Creek, and that ground became Lithia Park; the city voted a bond in 1914 to pipe mineral water from a nearby spring into it, and hired John McLaren, who had designed Golden Gate Park, to lay out the lower eighteen acres. In 1935 Angus Bowmer asked the city for four hundred dollars to build a stage in the old Chautauqua building for two Shakespeare plays over the Fourth of July.
