Medford was platted in 1883 in the middle of the Rogue Valley on Bear Creek, laid out in advance of a railroad rather than after one: the Oregon and California was building south from Roseburg and its agent David Loring wanted the line to run through the center of the valley. The town is named after a city near Loring's home in Massachusetts. The first train came in on January 18, 1884 and the town incorporated on February 24, 1885. In 1910 the hotelier Samuel Rosenberg bought two hundred and forty acres of pears and founded Bear Creek Orchards, where his sons Harry and David developed the Royal Riviera Comice pear.
