Eugene Skinner came in 1846, filed his claim that July and put up a cabin partway up the butte nearest the river. The Kalapuya called that butte Ya-Po-Ah, the high place, and it carries his name now. He described the valley between the two buttes as beautiful and reminding him of a bird's nest. His wife Mary was given the naming of the town and called it Eugene City after him. The legislature established the University of Oregon on October 12, 1872, the state commissioners accepted the building on July 20, 1876, and the doors opened to students that October 16. The Hult Center, named for Nils and Jewel Hult, opened downtown in September 1982.
