The city was founded in 1843 but had no agreed name until 1845, when the two men who owned the claim settled it with a coin. Asa Lovejoy was from Boston, Francis Pettygrove from Portland, Maine, and each wanted his own. Pettygrove took an 1835 copper penny out of his pocket, they agreed on best of three, and Pettygrove won. That penny is on display at the Oregon Historical Society downtown, which is a rare thing: the actual object that decided a city's name, still in the city it named. Before any of that, the settlement on the Willamette was known as Stumptown for the reason you would guess.
