The town was Wells' Ferry and then Coryell's Ferry, named for whoever owned the boat. In 1790 a fire destroyed Benjamin Parry's mills, and when he rebuilt them he called them the New Hope Mills, which is where the town got the name it kept. Painters arrived later: Edward Willis Redfield and William Langson Lathrop founded the art colony centered on Phillips Mill just north of the borough, and the Pennsylvania Impressionist work that came out of it is what the region is known for. The Bucks County Playhouse on the river was lost to foreclosure in 2010 and reopened after renovation in 2012.
