Set in the geographic center of Shelby County next door to Memphis, Bartlett grew from an old railroad town once called Union Depot into one of Tennessee's larger cities. It holds onto a small-town spirit through its two dozen city parks, family-friendly neighborhoods, and locally owned businesses.
Bartlett sits northeast of Memphis, so for anyone working in the city the day opens with the drive in and closes with the drive back. This practice adds no third trip, because there is no appointment to drive to. Attunement materials are digital and stay yours permanently, ready on a night when nothing else is on the calendar.
Bartlett began as Union Depot, the last significant Tennessee stop on the stagecoach road running west from Nashville, sitting on the old Raleigh to Somerville Stage Road. It took its present name from Major Gabriel M. Bartlett, an early settler and planter whose homeplace stood where Bartlett Station Plaza is now. The town incorporated on November 1, 1866 with fewer than a hundred residents and Bryan Wither as its first mayor. By 1886 it had grown to roughly three hundred people with a school, three churches and two gristmills.
