Overnight shifts at the airport freight hubs and long humid summers give Memphis a clock all its own, and rest often has to be claimed at odd hours. A session held at a distance takes no drive at either end of that shift. Hand-mixed essences travel by mail from Michigan to your door, whether that door is in Cooper-Young or out past Shelby Farms.
John Overton, James Winchester and Andrew Jackson laid out Memphis on May 22, 1819 and named it for the ancient Egyptian capital on the Nile, a river comparison that has followed the city ever since. It incorporated on December 19, 1826. The 1878 yellow fever epidemic is the hinge of its history: more than 5,000 deaths were entered in the official register between July 26 and November 27 of that year, and the city surrendered its charter afterward. Beale Street, Sun Studio and Stax carry the musical side of the story, and the National Civil Rights Museum now occupies the Lorraine Motel, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968.
