Jesse R. Collier laid out the settlement in 1836 and it was chartered in 1850 under Mayor Richard Ramsey. Confederate forces under Brigadier General James Chalmers attacked the garrison guarding the Memphis and Charleston Railroad here on October 11, 1863 and again on November 3, and were turned back both times. The town was so badly damaged that it had to be rechartered in 1870 under Mayor James B. Abington. The historic square went on the National Register in 1990, and in 2014 Parade named it the best main street in America.
