St. Johnsbury sits at the commercial heart of Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, a walkable Victorian town shaped by the Fairbanks family and home to the Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium and the 1871 St. Johnsbury Athenaeum. Its preserved architecture and quiet hill-and-riverfront setting invite a slower, reflective pace.
Northeast Kingdom darkness arrives early enough that winter evenings stretch, with Dog Mountain filling whatever daylight is left. No icy drive is involved in a distance session. Attunement materials live on your own device, ready on the quietest night in February.
The town was regranted by Vermont in 1786 and settled the same year, and the story is that Ethan Allen proposed naming it for his friend Jean de Crevecoeur, who suggested St. Johnsbury so it would not be confused with Saint John in New Brunswick. Thaddeus Fairbanks invented the platform scale here in 1830, and the family's manufacturing made the town a serious industrial place for the rest of the century. Franklin Fairbanks gave the Fairbanks Museum, which opened in 1891, and the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum is the only National Historic Landmark in the Northeast Kingdom. It remains the largest town by population in that region and its commercial center.
