Home to Virginia Tech, Blacksburg sits on a plateau in the New River Valley, ringed by the Blue Ridge and Appalachian mountains. The nearby New River, one of the oldest rivers in the world, and the region's hiking trails make it a place where natural stillness supports energy-focused healing.
Blacksburg's population swings between full academic terms and a much quieter summer, so the town reads differently across one year. Remote sessions hold the same shape through both, because nothing here depends on a local room being open. Aura sprays and blends are mixed to order in Michigan and posted, so a summer address works as well as a term-time one.
William Black laid out the town in 1797 on a tract of 38.75 acres, and it was formally founded on January 13, 1798. Smithfield, built around 1774 by Colonel William Preston on the old Draper's Meadow site, still stands near the Duck Pond on what is now the Virginia Tech campus. The Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College opened on October 2, 1872 with a faculty of three. The town sits 2,080 feet above sea level in the New River Valley, astride the Eastern Continental Divide, which is why the weather here is nothing like the weather an hour east.
