Roanoke's mountain-valley residents are served through distance energy work and shipped essence blends that honor the slower, nature-close pace of southwest Virginia.
Anchored by the glowing Mill Mountain Star and ringed by the Appalachian Trail, Roanoke draws hikers and outdoor-minded folks toward trail-side mindfulness and forest bathing.
Roanoke is the hub of a wide rural region, and people drive in from surrounding counties for most things that need an appointment. This works the other way around, since the session reaches the client at home and nobody covers those miles. Essence blends are mixed to order in Michigan and posted straight to the house.
The town was called Big Lick after the salt deposits that drew animals to the valley floor. On the suggestion of the railroad executive Frederick J. Kimball, residents voted to change it, and it officially became the Town of Roanoke on February 3, 1882, the same year the Norfolk and Western put its headquarters and shops here. The population went from under 700 in 1880 to more than 16,000 by 1890. A merchants' association put an 88.5-foot illuminated star on Mill Mountain in 1949 for the Christmas shopping season, kept it, and gave the city its name as the Star City of the South. Roanoke is the largest metropolitan area on the 469 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
