Jean Nicolet came ashore near here in 1634 and the French called the place La Baye des Puants, though the residents shortened it to La Bey and British traders called it Green Bay for the color the water turns in early spring. Charles Michel de Langlade set up a trading post in 1745 and moved here permanently in 1764, and he and his family are generally counted as the first European settlers in what is now Wisconsin. The city sits at the mouth of the Fox River where it opens into the bay off Lake Michigan. The Packers were founded in 1919 and have been in the National Football League since 1921.
