The name comes from a Potawatomi word most often read as council grounds. Solomon Juneau arrived in 1818 and built Juneautown on the east bank, Byron Kilbourn laid out a rival Kilbourntown on the west, and George H. Walker took the land to the south, and the three only became one city on January 31, 1846 after the Bridge War of 1845, with Juneau elected first mayor. German arrivals came in three waves between 1845 and 1893, and by 1900 about 34 percent of the population claimed German ancestry, which is where Miller, Pabst and Schlitz came from. The city also elected three Socialist mayors: Emil Seidel, Daniel Hoan and Frank Zeidler, who left office in 1960.
