Wauwatosa, known locally as Tosa, follows the Menomonee River through leafy parkways, a historic village, and Hart Park. Its independent shops, farmers markets, and river trails give this Milwaukee County suburb an easygoing, community-minded feel that sits comfortably alongside mindful, holistic self-care.
Monarch butterflies gather on the Milwaukee County Grounds each late summer before starting south, an unusual sight for a suburb. Distance sessions need no travel, which can suit shift work or an unusual day off. Essences arrive by post, mixed in Michigan one order at a time.
Charles Hart was the first Euro-American settler here in 1835, followed by seventeen other families the same year, and the mill he built on the Menomonee River in 1845 gave the place its first name, Hart's Mill. The present name comes from the Potawatomi leader Wauwataesie and the Potawatomi word for firefly. The village incorporated in 1892 and was rechartered as a city on May 27, 1897, then annexed 8.5 square miles west of the river on November 25, 1952. The Milwaukee County Regional Medical Center is here, taking in the Medical College of Wisconsin, Children's Wisconsin and Froedtert.
