Savannah is laid out on a plan James Oglethorpe drew in 1733, a grid punctuated every few blocks by a public square. Twenty-four were created over the following century and twenty-two survive, and together they anchor what is now a National Landmark Historic District. Oglethorpe Square itself was laid out in 1742 and named for him. The Bull Street run of squares ends at Forsyth Park, twenty-six acres of azalea and live oak around a fountain dating from 1858. The northern squares sit a few blocks from the bluff above the Savannah River, and River Street below marks the district's northern edge; once the centre of the city's shipping trade, it is now a promenade of shops and restaurants along the water.
