Tybee Island guards the mouth of the Savannah River, and there has been a light on its northern tip almost as long as Georgia has existed. The first, built in 1736 of brick and wood, stood ninety feet and was the tallest structure in America at the time. Erosion took it, and a second went up in 1742. The bottom sixty feet of the tower standing today is the third, built in 1773, with the upper ninety-four feet added in 1867. It is the oldest and tallest lighthouse in Georgia and among the most intact historic light stations left in the country. During the Second World War it guided coastal convoys and formed part of a secret signalling system for Allied shipping.
