Nauvoo rests on a bend of the Mississippi River, a historic pilgrimage town known for its restored temple, riverside vineyards, and annual Grape Festival. A place shaped by faith and reflection welcomes mindful, holistic practices that gently ease everyday stress.
Parley Street still runs straight down to the water where the wagons crossed in 1846, when a town that had been among the largest in Illinois emptied inside two years. A place holds that kind of quiet afterwards. Essence blends and aura sprays are mixed to order in Michigan and posted to you, and sessions ask for no drive at all.
Joseph Smith renamed the settlement of Commerce as Nauvoo on April 21, 1840 and directed Latter-day Saints here after the conflict in Missouri; the name is from Isaiah and means roughly they are beautiful. By 1844 about twelve thousand people lived here, which made it briefly one of the largest towns in Illinois. After Smith was killed that year the violence around the settlement drove most of the Saints out, and Brigham Young led them west. In 1849 a group of Icarians moved onto the emptied ground to run a utopian socialist commune; it reached nearly five hundred members and broke up in 1856. A temple was completed on the original site in June 2002.
